The Reverend John J. Coughlin, O.F.M. (born September 4, 1954) was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1983. He is a Franciscan friar of the Order of Friars Minor of the Holy Name Province. He presently serves as Professor of Law and concurrent Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. As a doctor of canon law and civil law, Fr.Coughlin is a prolific writer and speaker on matters of Church governance and contemporary affairs pertaining to the interrelation of law and religion.[1][2] His scholarly writing has a comparative focus on the understandings of the human person underpinning canon law and Anglo-American law.[3] Fr.Coughlin is recognized as an expert in administrative law, canon law, comparative law, jurisprudence, legal ethics and professional responsibility.[4][5]

Fr.Coughlin was born in New York City, New York to Regina and John Coughlin.
Fr.Coughlin holds a Juris Canonici Doctor (J.C.D) and a Juris Canonici Licentiatus (J.C.L.) in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Harvard University, a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Princeton Theological Seminary, a Master of Arts in Psychology (M.A.) from Columbia University and an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree in history (B.A.) from Niagara University, graduating summa cum laude.[6]
Fr.Coughlin was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on May 14, 1983. He is a Franciscan friar of the Order of Friars Minor of the Holy Name Province.[7] Following ordination, he ministered as a parish priest at St.Stephen of Hungary Church in New York City. A member of the New York state bar, Fr.Coughlin clerked for the Honorable Frank X. Altimari on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He served as general counsel of St. Bonaventure University in Olean, New York, from 1990 to 1993. From 1993 to 1996, he served as legal and canonical counsel to the Holy Name Province of Franciscan friars in New York. Upon appointment by John Cardinal O’Connor of New York, Fr.Coughlin served as Professor of Canon Law and Spiritual Director of St.Joseph’s Seminary in New York from 1994 to 2001. He also served the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York as a judge in the Appeals Tribunal, as vicar of canonical and legal aspects of health care, and as a member of the boards of several Catholic hospitals and educational institutions. During the summer of 1998, Fr. Coughlin was a member of the delegation of the Holy See to the United Nations treaty conference that established the International Criminal Court.[8]
From 1996 to 2003, Fr.Coughlin taught at St.John’s University School of Law where he served as Professor of Law.[9] Fr.Coughlin taught courses in Administrative Law, Canon Law, Family Law and Professional Responsibility.[10] During his tenure at St.John's, Fr.Coughlin was honored by the law students as the Distinguished Professor of the Year.
Since 2003, Fr.Coughlin has been a Professor of Law and in 2008 became concurrent Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame.[11] Fr.Coughlin teaches courses in Canon Law, Canon Law of Marriage, Legal Ethics, Professional Responsibility and the occasional seminar for a limited number of students.[12] A well-respected member of the Notre Dame Law School faculty, Fr. Coughlin was selected as Distinguished Professor of the Year in 2009 and 2011.[13] In 2009, Fr.Coughlin was also honored with the McLean Award which is bestowed upon a faculty member for extraordinary service to the law school community.[14] Fr.Coughlin was also recognized with the Crutchfield Professional Excellence Award from the Notre Dame Black Law Student Association.[15]
During the Spring 2009, Fr.Coughlin served as Visiting Professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.[16] Proficient in several foreign languages (Italian, Spanish and Latin, among others), Fr.Coughlin taught Administrative Law and Canon Law in both English and Italian.
Fr.Coughlin's scholarly writing has a comparative focus on the understandings of the human person underpinning canon law and Anglo-American law. In the winter of 2010, Fr.Coughlin published his first book with Oxford University Press, CANON LAW: A COMPARATIVE STUDY WITH ANGLO-AMERICAN LEGAL THEORY.[17] Following the success of his first publication, Fr.Coughlin will release a second book, LAW, PERSON, AND COMMUNITY, in the winter of 2011.
